Course Descriptions
Pre-Ballet (Ages 4 and 5)
45-minute class using the elements of rhythm, dynamics, space and shape to explore different movement forms. Body placement and correct manner of stretching emphasized through imagery. Some interpretive movement included. Goal is to develop strength, stretch, grace, coordination, and musicality in a context easily understood and enjoyable to children in this age group. Physical limitations of young children are carefully taken into consideration.Introductory Ballet* (Age 6)
45- minute class introducing correct body placement and simple exercises while standing at the barre. Use of basic ballet positions, including French terminology, is emphasized. Stretching exercise for strength and flexibility included in center work. Rhythm, grace and coordination incorporated into exercises which take the form of short dance pieces. Combinations of steps gradually developed. Designed to prepare students for classical ballet training, while still appealing to the six year old's sense of enjoyment and imagination.Ballet 1-4* (Ages 7 and up)
Cecchetti technique. One-hour class attended a minimum of once each week. (Ballet 4 students are encouraged to study more frequently as a preparation for pointe work.) Introducing in Ballet 1 the elementary exercises at the barre, in the center, and moving on the diagonal, each level becomes more complex while building on the material learned in the previous level. French terminology is utilized, and body placement and correct execution of steps is strongly emphasized. Single steps are developed into combinations of steps, using changes of rhythm and direction. Coordination of the movement of the body, arms, legs, and head should begin to emerge, along with a sense of discipline. As a student progresses, classes become an intellectual as well as physical workout. Therefore a 3 ring binder is required for age appropriate informational handouts. These binders should be kept through all levels as information will be added to them every year.Ballet 5 – Advanced
1 ½-hour classes (some incorporating pointe work). Ballet exercises build on those learned in the basic classes while increasing in speed, number, and complexity. New steps are introduced in each level. Students continue to develop strength and stretch while greater concentration is placed on total body line and an emerging sense of style. Awareness of the body and how it works in relation to dance steps is stressed. Goal is to produce a “polished” dancer who has a strong technique, good performing skills, works intelligently and possesses self-discipline.Pointe (Ages 11 and up)
Length of pointe class dependent on level. Students begin pointe work in Ballet 5 at the discretion of the teacher and only if studying a minimum of twice weekly. Beginning with simple exercises at the barre, dancers proceed to a full range of steps on pointe in the advanced level.Variations/Pas de Deux** (Advanced Students)
One hour class focusing on learning various solo sections from popular ballets, or partnering techniques. Students will learn the choreography as well as how to perform the variation with it's specific style in mind. Men who take the class will be able to assist in learning basic partnering techniques, including lifts etc. as well as awareness of their partner's placement in relation to their own.Technique and Placement** (12 and up)
A one hour class dedicated to going in depth into various aspects of technique and body placement. Students will discover the physical mechanics of ballet technique. This is more of a classroom setting, however there will be movement exploration to enforce, and apply what is learned. Students will need to bring a notebook to write down information they will receive in the class.Beginner – Intermediate/Advanced Modern** (Ages 10 and up)
One hour and fifteen minute class focusing on the training of the body through the study of modern dance vocabulary as developed by the pioneers of the twentieth century. Explorations of space, time, energy and self-awareness will be emphasized. Studies in improvisation and choreography will be included.Adult/Teen Ballet** (All ages welcome)
One-hour class designed for older students to begin the study of ballet or refresh a past knowledge. Geared to the intellectual and physical capabilities of the more mature pupil, classes move at a faster pace then children's classes in terms of the amount of material covered. Lessons offer total body conditioning, music awareness, aerobic exercise, enjoyment and appreciation of ballet as an art form.Mommy and Me** (2 ½ and 3 accompanied by an adult)
45-min class designed to help children begin to develop a sense of rhythm through movement, imagery, and games. It is designed to be enjoyable for both the child and the adult, as well as provide self-confidence in preparation for Pre-Ballet.*Class schedules for these classes (Intro, Ballet 2, and Ballet 4) will be scheduled as needed. Until such time students will be placed in classes that reflect their abilities.
**This class will be offered in six week sessions throughout the course of the year. Students may join at any time. Schedule, tuition, and registration will be posted soon. We are looking forward to introducing other classes such as Yoga, Pilates and others as the year progresses.
